In the book, Where The Red Fern Grows, a boy about the age of 12, gets a huge desire for puppies. But not just any kind of puppies. He wants Red Bone Coon Hounds. But not just one either. He needs two. The Boy's name is Billy and he will not go on without these dogs. He even goes to the point where he almost starves himself.
Billy decides to start saving money to buy these dogs. There was an ad that Billy got a hold of for these dogs for 50 dollars. Some fisherman across the river pay Billy for gathering some food for them. One night, Billy sneaks off to get his dogs. When he returns, he finds two names carved in a heart on a tree. Ann and Dan. So that was it. Old Dan and Little Ann. They become great hunting dogs and even win a gold cup. But eventually, tragedy strikes. Old Dan is mauled by a mountain lion and doesn't make it. Little Ann is so depressed that she dies as well.
My favorite character in the book was the grandfather. He was always supportive, kind, and most of all, he had faith in Billy. He placed the order for the dogs and even convinced Billy to compete in a hunting competition. He even gave Billy two dollars for a bet against some mean bullies. The grandfather in my opinion was the best character.
The author's purpose was to entertain.
The intended audiences were anyone who enjoys american classics.
